Braces or clear aligners?

One of the most frequently asked questions. How the two methods differ in daily life:

BracesClear aligners
AppearanceMetal or tooth-coloured brackets. With the lingual option, the brackets are behind the teeth and cannot be seen.Transparent aligners; usually unnoticed unless someone looks closely.
WearFixed; stays on the teeth throughout treatment.Removable; must be worn 20–22 hours a day.
EatingYou eat with them in; hard and sticky foods are avoided.Removed for meals; afterwards the teeth are brushed and the aligner is put back in.
Oral careThe areas around the brackets and wire need careful cleaning.Since the aligner is removed, brushing and flossing are done as usual.
SpeechBrackets on the front of the teeth usually do not affect speech. There may be a slight lisp on some sounds for the first few days.
Check-upsEvery 4–6 weeks.Every 6–10 weeks.
Suitable forUsed for a very wide range of problems.Used for many problems; some complex movements may need braces or additional methods.

Both are well-established and effective methods; neither is superior to the other. Which one suits you is decided together at the examination, based on the condition of your teeth, the aim of treatment and your expectations.
